Bernard Tilley

Bernie was an outstanding high school cross country and track athlete. He still holds the Wheelersburg High School record in the 800 meter run. During his senior year he was named to the 1st Team All State Cross Country team in the fall of 1972. He followed that phenomenal recognition with an outstanding spring track season in 1973 that culminated by being crowned the Class AA state champion in the mile and named to the All State track team.

Bernie’s successful cross country and track career led to a college scholarship at the University of Rio Grande. During his college years he collected All District and All Conference awards. He was named Rio Grande’s athlete of the year his sophomore, junior and senior year and still holds the 1500 meter, the mile and the 800 meter school records. Bernie’s family and friends are most proud of him being named an Honorable Mention All American Cross Country athlete during the fall of his senior year and 1st Team All American in Track during the spring. His jersey has been retired and he has been inducted into the University of Rio Grande Athletic Hall of Fame.
